Hi, my name is Angelica Velazquez and just like many I have a dream. My dream is to graduate from UNLV. Unfortunately, at the moment that may not be possible despite having just completed my Junior year at UNLV, and it’s not because I didn’t do well, because I did my best and wound up on the Deans list and was even accepted into the International Dean’s List Society. But sadly, none of my accomplishments are enough to get me through UNLV, because of one choice that was recently made by the board of regents who decided to raise tuition seventeen percent over the next four years. I understand why they did it, and don’t blame them for wanting to make UNLV an even better insitution than it already is, but by raising tuition they have made it harder for students like myself to continue attending UNLV.
And I really don’t want my dream to end here, because I want to graduate from UNLV more than anything, but sadly UNLV has made it more difficult for me to achieve my dream because the financial aid and student loans I recieve are not enough to help me cover all my expenses. The past two semesters that I attended UNLV my dad was barely able to come up with the money that he had to pay out of pocket. I even sold my car in order to help my dad cover the expenses of my first semester at UNLV, but this time around I have nothing of value left to sell, and sadly my dad’s hard work is not cutting it despite him working seven days a week. There’s days where I don’t even see him until night time because he’s working late in an attempt to save enough money to pay for my next semester at UNLV, but I know that he’s struggling to get the money together, and I hate seeing him under so much pressure but he is doing his best and I’m grateful to him for that. But I know there’s a high chance that he won’t be able to come up with the money and if that happens I sadly won’t be able to return to UNLV, which I hate just thinking about, because I want to graduate from UNLV more than anything. To some it may not sound like much, but to me it’s everything because ever since I could imagine myself at a four year school, UNLV was where I could see myself and now that I started living my dream I want to see it all the way through. I know I have what it takes to graduate from the college of my dreams, so please help me stay at UNLV. By helping me, not only will I be able to remain a proud Rebel, but you’ll also help keep my dream alive.
